Unit 6- Final assignment: Create an ad, or Letter from the Future

This unit occupies the rest of the course. There are no scheduled readings or discussion during this period. Instead you are working independently. You have one project to complete.

FINAL PROJECTS ARE DUE NO LATER THAN AUGUST 5TH.

You have two final project options: 1) create an ad, or 2) create a letter from the future. Each is explained below.

1. Create an ad

You can create an advertisement involving any media you like. It must express what you have learned in the course about how media persuades by applying it to the content of your ad.

Your ad could be in any number of forms. It could be a transmedia social media campaign, a conventional TV ad, a print ad for magazines- whatever you like. We will talk about specifics when you decide what approach you would like to take.

Note: You will need to decide what an "ad" is. If you are thinking TV, then it is 30 seconds with a 15 second pullout. But you might consider a 1 minute PSA that you are going to post on YouTube to be an ad. So, figure out what you want to do, and we will talk about specifics. Generally speaking, if you are doing a video ad, you will need to produce a story map, script and story table.

2. Wite a letter from the future

A few points about this assignment:

This is described in your text, Digital Community, Digital Citizen, on page 133. The idea is to project yourself 20 years into the future, and report back about what you see. Here are a few points about this project:

  • This is to be about 10 pages in length, absolutely no more than 12.

  • Imagine you are writing this letter to an intelligent friend.

  • You will have two foci in this letter: 1) setting the scene of what the future looks like, and 2) a particular facet of the future directly related to an area of your interest.

"Setting the scene of what the future looks like" can happen in many ways, such as describing average events at breakfast, going to work, taking in some recreation with friends- whatever. The goal is to give readers a feel for living in your future. Then drill down on one aspect of living in the future that directly relates to what you do for a living, or hope to be doing for a living. Presumably this is focused on your work as a media psychologist in some respect.

3. Write a formal paper. This should be about a topic from the course that interests you. Aim for 10-12 pages, APA style, in formal academic language.
