Theory and Practice of Innovation
Theme
What is Drucker's contribution to theory of innovation in world of management? How does Gartner's Hype Cycle help us make sense of the world of technological innovation?
Overview
This week Mike Felix, an almost 40 year veteran of the telecommunications business, Media Psych PhD candidate, and a senior executive at AT&T, will lead a Moodle discussion on disruptive innovation as it relates to the world of media. There will be no GoTo Meeting. Mike is going to apply what we've learned about innovation specifically to media. After listening to Christensen on disruptive innovation, we are going to use his principles from The Innovator's DNA. We are also going to read Drucker, and then compare and contrast Christensen's work and Drucker's work to see what both add to the study of disruptive innovation in the world of media.
If there is time, we will also look at The Gartner Hype Cycle, an industry standard in terms of evaluating the creditworthiness of the buzz associated with innovative technology.

Moodle Discussion - No GoToMeeting
Tehre is no GoTo Meeting scheduled for this week. Instead, pick any mass medium, and discuss the following in Moodle: Where is this medium on the adoption curve? (briefly support your thesis); Did its emergence fit better with Christensen's notion of disruption, or with one of Drucker's sources of innovation? Where is this medium vulnerable to someone else's innovation?
